Philip Baker Hall, a prolific actor who appeared in over 100 films and television shows over the course of his 50-year career, died on June 12. He was 90 years old. On Twitter, Hall’s neighbor and Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Farmer confirmed the news, calling Hall “one of the wisest, most talented, and sweetest guys I’ve ever encountered.” Hall made his feature film debut in Cowards, a 1970 drama that premiered at Cannes.
With early parts on Good Times and M*A*S*H, he became noted for his character playing and guest appearances on TV shows. He began a collaboration with writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson in the 1990s with the films Cigarettes & Coffee and Hard Eight. Hall went on to star in Anderson’s films Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
The Truman Show, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Zodiac, and Argo are among his notable films. Hall’s most recent part was in the Netflix series Messiah, which will premiere in 2020.
