Oxlade fined 5 million in damages over his leaked sex tape
Oxlade fined 5 million – The Lagos High Court has fined Nigerian singer Oxlade five million dollars for his leaked Snapchat sex tape with a woman.
Remember that in 2022, the singer’s sex tape appeared online without the woman in the video, John Blessing, knowing about it or giving her permission.
Due to the uproar that the leaked video caused, the singer was forced to publicly apologize to both his fans and Blessing.
Despite Oxlade’s apology, Blessing filed a lawsuit seeking N20 million in damages and a declaration that her fundamental rights to dignity, privacy, and freedom from discrimination were grossly violated by the singer’s recording of the explicit sexual acts without her knowledge or consent. These rights are protected by Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as well as Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
In a decision dated January 24, 2023, Justice Olalekan Oresanya called the singer’s efforts to secretly record and upload the audio to the internet “despicable, horrible, ugly, and classless.”
He also admonished Oxlade not to engage in the same actions in the future when he is with the other sex.
The judge further reprimanded Oxlade for disregarding the legal procedure and charged that his attorney had helped Oxlade insult the court.
The claimant is entitled to receive N5 million from Oxlade in two installments of N2 million and N3 million, as per the consent judgment.
The ruling forbids her from starting any further legal actions or actions pertaining to the events that gave birth to the lawsuit, as well as from bringing up or addressing the issues made in the claim on any forum or in front of any third party.
