Norman Mineta Family, Passing, Nationality, Wiki, Ethnicity

Norman Mineta, an American politician who served as Secretary of Transportation in President George W. Bush’s Cabinet, was born in San Jose, California, to Japanese immigrants Kunisaku Mineta and Kane Watanabe.

The Asian Exclusion Act prevented his parents from becoming citizens in the United States at the time.

The Mineta family, along with thousands of other Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans, was incarcerated at the Heart Mountain internment camp outside Cody Wyoming, for several years during World War II.

Mineta, a baseball aficionado, had his baseball bat confiscated by authorities upon arrival at the camp because it could be used as a weapon.

After Mineta was elected to the United States House of Representatives many years later, a Los Angeles man sent him a $1,500 bat that had formerly belonged to Hank Aaron, which Mineta was obliged to return since it violated the House restriction on accepting presents worth more than $250.
