Jimmy Johnson, a well-known recording artist, died of a stroke at the age of 93 at his home in Harvey.

According to his wife, Sherry, the Chicago bluesman battled colon cancer while recording tunes for Delmark Records for decades.

“He was one of those outstanding performers that you could recognize just by hearing one note of his voice or one note of his guitar,” Alligator Records founder Bruce Iglauer remarked.

“His fervent, high-tenor voice and graceful minor-key guitar string bending were instantly recognizable.

He was not merely a fiery guitarist and a powerful, distinct voice, but his music had the profound emotional impact of the best blues,” Bruce continued.
