Giorgio Chiellini Set To Retire From International Football

After Italy’s friendly versus Argentina at Wembley in June, legendary Italian footballer Giorgio Chiellini will retire from international football.

After Juventus’ thrilling late win over Sassuolo on Monday, Chiellini told DAZN, “I’ll say farewell to the national team at Wembley, where I experienced the height of my career winning the Euros.”

“I’d like to leave the Azzurri with a pleasant memory.” That will undoubtedly be my final match with Italy.”
The 37-year-old defender has 116 caps for the Azzurri and was instrumental in their European Championship triumph last summer.

On the list of Italy’s most-capped players, he is tied for fifth with Andrea Pirlo. Only Daniele de Rossi (117 appearances), Paolo Maldini (126), Fabio Cannavaro (136), and Gianluigi Buffon (176) have more.

Chiellini made his Italy debut in 2004 and was a member of the team that finished second in the 2012 Euros.

Chiellini is yet to determine whether or not he would stay with Juventus after this season.

He stated, “My love affair with Juventus is not over, it will never be over.” “Of course, from now until the end of the season, I’ll have to examine everything and discuss my options with my family.”

“First and foremost, let’s finish fourth [in Serie A] and win the Coppa Italia, and then we’ll sit down with my two families – at home and at Juventus – to work out what’s best for everyone.”

“I did the same thing last summer; I took my time and waited until after the Euros to sign the new contract.” You can’t look too far into the future at my age, but that’s natural; it’s fine.”

With four games remaining, Juventus are in fourth place in Serie A, eight points ahead of fifth-placed AS Roma.
