Heath Ledger had just finished filming his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight a few months before his death.
The Dark Knight was in post-production at the time of his death, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, in which he was playing his final role as Tony, was in the middle of filming.
The death of Heath Ledger on January 22, 2008 was unexpected, and it dominated the attention for the upcoming picture.

He did, however, appear posthumously in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell filling in for Ledger, who had not yet concluded production.

Before beginning filming, Ledger wanted to make sure that the Joker’s voice and chuckle were correct. The Joker that resulted was a psychopathic clown who lacked empathy and remorse.
