Arnaz and Ball are often acknowledged as the creators of the syndicated rerun, which they popularized with the I Love Lucy television series.
Arnaz and Lucille Ball co-founded and headed Desilu Productions, a television production firm that was originally formed to promote I Love Lucy to television networks.
After I Love Lucy ended, Arnaz went on to produce several other television shows, including The Ann Sothern Show and The Untouchables, first with Desilu Productions and then independently.
He was also known for commanding the Desi Arnaz Orchestra, a Latin music ensemble.
For much of his life, Arnaz was a chain smoker, and he frequently smoked cigarettes on the set of I Love Lucy. Until he was in his fifties, he smoked cigars. In 1986, Arnaz was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away on December 2, 1986, at the age of 69.
