Barcelona player to take over from Messi as ‘captain’ revealed
Following Lionel Messi’s departure, Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has named the player who will lead the team as captain.
On Sunday, Messi said a tearful goodbye to Barcelona after it became clear that the Blaugrana would be unable to register him.
While Messi is set to join his close friend Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain, Koeman has announced that Sergio Busquets will succeed Messi as the club’s new captain.
“Despite Messi’s departure, we are tremendously eager for this season. We are confident that we will bring you many joys this season,” Koeman addressed Barcelona supporters ahead of the Gamper Trophy match against Juventus.
“This great club’s future lies in the hands of its youth.
“It’s been difficult to go a year without performing in front of an audience, so we’re pleased to see you again.”
“Sergio Busquets will succeed Lionel Messi as Barcelona captain.”
“It is a pride to be the captain,” Busquets stated in response.
“With Carles Puyol, Xavi, and Leo, I’ve had wonderful examples. Thank you, Leo, for elevating Barça to new heights… Leo, you have my eternal gratitude.
