After a rare sighting, a couple helps save a 'beautiful' octopus from swarming seagulls.
A couple returned an octopus to the ocean after discovering it on Penrhos beach near Holyhead. According to NorthWalesLive, octopus sightings on land are highly rare, and Jamie and Stacey McNeil initially believed their collie dog had detected something less exotic.
Concerned that it may not survive without assistance, Stacey, age 34, moved it across the shoreline and into the sea to give it a fighting chance. She stated, “Our dog was the first to discover it.” We believed he had found a tennis ball or something similar, as he enjoys sniffing out such objects.
“It was magnificent, a deep reddish-brown hue. It was attempting to return to the water by crawling across the sand but was making little progress. Without assistance, he was unlikely to survive. Had we abandoned him, we thought he would have been doomed.”

The octopus was in jeopardy because seagulls were circling. Stacey adds, “We observed gulls circling above us.” If we had continued walking, I feared the birds would have made him their supper.”
Consequently, while still hooked to a rock, the octopus was transported towards the coast. It was a slightly unsettling event for Stacey.
She stated, “A tentacle began to move up my arm.” “I did not wish to be duped! When I approached the water, he seemed to realize that this was the best option, so he let go.
The octopus will be immortalized in Stacey’s upcoming book. Her publication Fox Under the Moon was an instant hit last summer, resulting in 60,000 Facebook followers. In November, she will publish the second book in the Fox series, and the octopus Penrhos will be included in the third book, which features a whale.
Stacey stated, “There were severe winds the day before.” “Perhaps a strong wave carried it ashore, but it was still odd to see it above the high water mark.”
