In connection with the World War II submarine warfare movie Das Boot, Petersen received six Academy Award nominations (1981). In addition to being nominated for a BAFTA Award and a DGA Award, Petersen won two of those for adapted screenplay and directing.
At the age of 81, Wolfgang Petersen passed away in Brentwood from pancreatic cancer on August 12, 2022.
