Robert John Downey Jr was born in Manhattan, New York, to filmmaker Robert Downey Sr and actress Elsie Ford on April 4, 1965. His parents split when he was 13 years old, and he moved to Los Angeles to live with his father. He dropped out of high school in California at the age of 16 and moved back to New York to live with his mother and pursue an acting career.
Robert Downey Jr. made his first on-screen cameo as a puppy in his father’s film Pound at the age of five (1970). Between 1972 and 1990, he appeared in five more of his father’s films as a cameo performer.
Robert Downey Jr. was a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live, NBC’s iconic sketch comedy show, from 1985 to 1986. His first major movie hits were ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘Iron Man 2008,’ for which he was well-received. His portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in ‘Chaplin’ (1992) is unquestionably one of his most notable efforts to date, earning him a BAFTA Award.

For ‘Ally McBeal (2001),’ Robert Downey Jr earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Guild Award, as well as Golden Globe Awards for ‘Shorcuts (1994)’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes (2009),’ and two People’s Choice Awards for ‘The Avengers (2013).’ He is now regarded as one of the most gifted, intelligent, and versatile actors of his generation in Hollywood.
