Investigators allege Joseph Anthony McKinnon strangled his girlfriend and died of a heart attack while burying her body in the garden.

After neighbors reported an unresponsive man, Joseph McKinnon’s body was discovered on Saturday, May 7 in the little hamlet of Trenton, South Carolina.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered a body wrapped in bin bags in a recently excavated hole while investigating the death of the 60-year-old. McKinnon is suspected of attacking Dent and strangling her to death in their house.

Patricia Dent, 65, was his companion, according to a statement from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office. She had been strangled, according to a post-mortem examination, and neighbors remembered McKinnon digging a hole in the yard the day before.

He had nearly completed filling in the hole when he dropped his shovel, walked away, and fainted, according to authorities.
