On May 18th, Mpho Moerane passed away. Following a major automobile accident on Monday, Moerane spent a week at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. On Wednesday, May 18 evening, a family representative, Mike Maile, confirmed his death outside the hospital.

From October to November 2021, Mpho Moerane served as the mayor of Johannesburg. He worked as a politician, trader, and electrician in South Africa. From December 2019 to September 2021, he was a member of the African National Congress’s mayoral committee for environment and infrastructure services.
Moerane served as the African National Congress’s regional treasurer (ANC). He was sworn in as President on October 1, 2021. He served until the municipal elections on November 1st. Moerane was defeated in the election for mayor at the first council meeting on November 22, 2021, by Mpho Phalatse.
