Stokke was born in Newport Beach, California, to Allan and Cindy Stokke, and grew up in a sports household; her elder brother David was a national-level young gymnast. She began pole vaulting while attending Newport Harbor High School after attempting gymnastics and quickly rose to become one of the top teenage vaulters in the country. In 2004, she won the United States title at the age of 15/16, with a championship record of 3.81 m. (12 ft 6 in).

A journalist photographed Stokke competing in New York in early 2007 for a Californian track and field website, and the images were posted online. The photograph was subsequently re-posted in May by With Leather, a sports site with a significant male following, who commented on Stokke’s beauty under the headline “Pole Vaulting is Sexy, Barely Legal.”
After she rose to fame, many more photographers began to attend the track and field competitions she took part in and her internet fame persisted over the following years.
