Chrissie took part in an audition for the band 999, although it didn’t lead to success, as she was eventually replaced by Malcolm McLaren in “Masters of Backside.” In 1978, she spent a relatively brief period with the Moors Murderers.
Hynde recorded a demo tape and submitted it to Real Records. Dave Hill assumed the role of the singer’s manager, not only overseeing her career but also covering the rent for her rehearsal space in Covent Garden, London. Following his advice, she proceeded to assemble a band, recruiting Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott, and Martin Chambers. This collaborative effort resulted in the formation of the band known as The Pretenders.
The band unveiled its debut single in January 1979, which achieved the No. 33 spot on the UK charts. Their second single, released later in 1979, enjoyed significant success.
