Deborah Fraser was born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on June 9, 1965. Catherine Tshabalala-Fraser was her mother. She began her career in 1985 as a backup vocalist for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lucky Dube, Brenda Fassie, Hugh Masekela, and Jonas Gwangwa.
Deborah Fraser’s first album, Abanye bayombona, was published in 2000 and went on to sell over a million copies. Universal Music eventually signed her. On April 12, 2019, her album Uhambo was nominated for Best Traditional Faith Album at the 23rd South African Music Awards.
Deborah Fraser has won multiple honors, including the SABC Crown Gospel Music Award for Best Female Artist, the SAMA Award for Best Gospel, the Metro Award for Best Gospel, and the Kora Award for Best Gospel Artist.
Deborah Fraser was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in the sacred realm of music by Trinity International Bible University in November 2021. She died of a stroke on May 15, 2022, at the age of 56, at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
