In the 1980s, Bert started his karting career. He later moved on to the Formula Ford, the Porsche Carrera Cup, and the first DTM.
He triumphed in a Porsche 911 GT3-R at the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring in 2000. When the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) series restarted in 2000, he competed for Mercedes-Benz.
Bert competed in DTM for Mercedes from 2001 to 2004, winning a race at the Hockenheimring in 2001.
