How Did Richard Wagner CBS Die?
Richard Wagner, a journalist best known for covering the Vietnam War and countless other conflicts across the world over his three-decade career as a correspondent for CBS News, has died.
At the age of 85, Wagner passed away.
Wagner died at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to his wife Donna Lewis-Wagner.
Wagner’s widow provided no information regarding his demise, including the cause of death.
Wagner began his career at CBS News in 1964 and spent time in Saigon as one of the correspondents covering the Vietnam War at a period when the military had yet to determine the limitations of access to operations.

In a podcast with fellow war journalists in 2018, Wagner highlighted the challenges and worries of reporting from the front lines.
Wagner claims that
“I recall being pinned down and unable to move, and then the barrage lifted almost as quickly as it had started, and now that it was safe, I wanted to quickly jump up and perform a stand up…”
“I realized I couldn’t accomplish it because my hand was trembling so badly.” It had such an influence on me that I couldn’t do what I needed to do until I got myself together.”
Wagner also covered the following historical events:
- Troubles in Northern Ireland and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.
- Events in Baghdad that led to Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait and then the response of the U.S. and allies, Operation Desert Storm.
- National politics and other events, including the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island and the Challenger explosion.
