Mendes graduated from Pine Ridge Secondary School in June 2016, where he participated in ice hockey and soccer, was a member of the high school glee club, and took acting classes to improve his stage presence (leading as Prince Charming at one point). At the age of 14, Mendes learned to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorial videos.

He began uploading cover videos on YouTube less than a year later. After posting a cover of Justin Bieber’s “As Long as You Love Me” on the social video app Vine in 2013, Mendes received 10,000 likes and the same number of followers the next day.

After that, in just a few months, he racked up millions of views and followers, becoming famous for his six-second snatches of popular tunes. At the time, Mendes saw Bieber as a role model.
