William Adair, who conducted the Blair Big Band at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, was a vital member of Nashville’s jazz community.

William Adair was more renowned in Nashville for his work as a jazz champion, admirer, and instructor: he increased jazz awareness and visibility, and he brought jazz to a Blair campus that had previously focused on classical music.
William Adair was a masterful multi-instrumentalist who collaborated onstage and in the studio with artists such as Brenda Lee, The Oak Ridge Boys, Waylon Jennings, Ronnie Milsap, George Strait, and Alabama (he played on the latter band’s top-charting single, “The Closer You Get”). He was also a broadcast music producer who won over 150 awards for composing and arranging advertisements.
William Adair, Bobbe Adair’s husband, died in February 2014 at the age of 66 from melanoma cancer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
