Norman Mineta Funeral, Obituary, Cause Of Death

Norman Mineta, the first Asian-American Cabinet Secretary, died on May 3, 2022, at the age of 90, after suffering from a heart condition.

Mineta had broken through racial barriers for Asian Americans by serving in high-profile government positions and, as the nation’s federal transportation secretary, ordering commercial flights grounded following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Mineta died quietly at his home in Edgewater, Maryland, surrounded by family, according to John Flaherty, Mineta’s former chief of staff.

Flaherty continued, “He was an excellent public servant and a very dear friend.”

Mineta was also the first Asian American to be appointed to the Cabinet of the United States, serving under both Democratic and Republican Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Mineta was then awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Mineta was “a beautiful American narrative about someone who overcome hardship and discrimination to serve in the United States Army, Congress, and the Cabinet of two Presidents,” according to the former president.

Danealia “Deni” Brantner, Mineta’s wife, has four children and eleven grandkids.
