Just one week after his 84th birthday on July 26, Arrington passed away.

On Wednesday, August 3, LASTCAR’s Brock Beard tweeted about the man’s passing.
I’m sorry to hear about the demise of Buddy Arrington, another of NASCAR’s most well-known independent drivers, who was known for both his distinctive driving style and his dedication to running Mopar products far into the 1980s. Brock Beard wrote, “My sympathies to Joey and the rest of the Arrington family.

American driver Buddy Arrington, born on July 26, 1938, competed in the Winston Cup Series.
Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Buddy Arrington raced in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Arrington, a Southern Virginia native, made his racing debut in 1963 and competed for the next 25 years on a shoestring budget and with a volunteer crew, funding his career through various jobs. He was a tobacco farmer, used car salesman, and even briefly worked as a moonshiner.
From 1964 to 1988, Arrington made 560 Cup starts, earning 15 top fives and 103 top 10s.
His best finish in a race was third, coming a few times over his career: in 1965 at Nashville Speedway and in 1979 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Arrington raced until his money finally ran out in 1988, retiring after making his final start in the 1988 Pepsi Firecracker 400 at Daytona.
His son, Joey Arrington is an American former NASCAR driver, team owner, and crew chief from Rocky Mount, Virginia.
