Johnny Brown and Ellery Brown welcomed Ketanji Onyika Brown into the world on September 14, 1970 in Washington, D.C.
Ketanji, who was reared in Miami, Florida after being born in Washington, D.C., earned his senior high school diploma there in 1988. Later, she went to Harvard University for both her undergraduate and legal studies. While there, she worked as an editor for the Harvard Law Review.
Both of Ketanji’s parents attended historically black colleges and universities and graduated from them.
Although they both began their careers as public school teachers, her mother Ellery served as the principal at New World School of the Arts while her father Johnny Brown rose to the position of head attorney for the Miami-Dade County School Board.
