Why are Marcus Smart and Al Horford out?

Why are Marcus Smart and Al Horford out – Horford had to miss out Game 1 due to coronavirus precautions, while Smart had to sit out Game 1 due to a foot injury. Smart, on the other hand, had a shootaround practice on Thursday morning, May 19, and was cleared to play after no setbacks.

On Thursday, May 19, just hours before Game 2 of the series against the Miami Heat, Al Horford’s stint in the NBA’s Health and Safety Protocols came to an end. Marcus Smart, the Kia Defensive Player of the Year, was also able to return to the Celtics’ lineup after recovering from a mid-foot sprain.

The Celtics’ coach, Ime Udoka, said he’s “glad to get two of our starting five back,” adding that both are “100 percent.” Horford’s problem was never revealed, but given that he was under protocol and required additional testing, his absence on May 17 was very certainly related to a test result.
